Influence of the suction behaviour of masonry bricks on the properties of the mortar in the joints
Numerous tests were carried out to investigate the influence of the suction behaviour of sandlime bricks on the properties of the mortar in joints and on the load-bearing and deformation behaviour of masonry when exposed to pressure. With the aid of the results described in the article it was possible to show that the suction behaviour of the masonry bricks and the level of the resulting influence on the properties of the jointing mortar under investigation and on the masonry depends to a significant extent on to the initial moisture content of the bricks during the processing. For the materials investigated during the project it can be recorded that the properties of the jointing mortar and, associated with this, also of the masonry improve consistently with rising moisture content of the masonry bricks when they are laid. However, the extent to which the water suction by the bricks ultimately affects the masonry varies greatly depending on the chosen combination of materials. In the present case the contact with the sandlime brick influences the properties of the masonry significantly more strongly with softer mortar than in the test pieces produced with the harder mortar. There are plans to incorporate the compressive strength of the mortar in the joint as a function of the suction behaviour of the masonry bricks in a future approach to determining the compressive strength of the masonry. This is because this compressive strength is more likely to reflect the actual properties of the mortar in the masonry than the compressive strength of mortar that has hardened in steel moulds used previously in the empirical model. However, the compressive strength of the joint cannot be determined directly in all cases. For the mortar under investigation and the types of mortar still to be tested the attempt will therefore be made to establish a relationship in each case with the standard compressive strength of the unaffected mortar in which the hygroscopic interaction between masonry brick and masonry mortar is taken into account.
