Pilch, Erwin / Hadl, Philipp
Planning strengthening and adaptation measures as well as the construction of a UHPFRC concrete topping pilot project in Austria’s major road network.
Ultra high performance concretes (UHPCs) have great potential for repairing and strengthening existing structures. The basic idea behind the use of UHPC for repairing and strengthening bridges is to improve the load bearing capacity and durability of conventional reinforced concrete structural elements with a thin layer of UHPC. In this way it will be possible in future to minimize the usual weak points associated with sealing and the bituminous layer, such as leaking points and rutting. Over 40 mUHPC were produced in the ready-mixed concrete plant for the pilot project and placed on site as cast-in-situ concrete. This pilot project made it possible to test the practical feasibility of the laboratory developments. This article describes the first application of UHPFRC for repairing and strengthening a road bridge in Austria’s major road network. UHPC containing micro steel fibres was used. This pilot project illustrates the potential of the UHPFRC material and demonstrates its practical feasibility as well as achieving the transition from the laboratory to practical conditions. Contrary to expectations, the production of the surface course gradient of 4.25 % did not present any problems. The steel fibres used and the high content of 2/4 mm basalt grains meant that the concrete flow was sufficiently inhibited. This effect was assisted by the presence of conventional reinforcement in the concrete topping. The height and thickness of the structural elements and their concreting sequence can be optimized still further for future projects. In particular, the production of UHPFRC in the ready-mixed concrete plant using a mixing element that was not ideal was a great challenge for the concrete technology. Extensive laboratory trials and preliminary trials in the concrete plant were needed in order to implement this pilot project. The successful use of UHPFRC under construction site conditions shows that the technology is now ready for use on construction sites using conventional building equipment. The findings and experience gained here in relation to the concrete technology and construction work can be applied to future projects.
