Fahrbahndecke mit Hochofenzement CEM III/A
Erfahrungen mit einer Erprobungsstrecke
Ehrlich, Norbert / Mellwitz, Roland / Rother, Karl-Heinz
– Carriageway surfacing with CEM III/A blastfurnace cement – In past years the demands for conserving resources, for reducing the use of energy and for lowering CO2 emissions have led to the general situation where CEM II Portland composite cements and CEM III blastfurnace cements are being used increasingly in concrete construction. As a result, consideration was given to replacing Portland cement, which is traditionally used for carriageway surfacing, by cement that contains granulated blastfurnace slag – especially as concrete carriageway surfaces made with Portland slag cement (formerly iron Portland cement) that are over 50 years old have proved successful. A 1000 m long test section using a CEM III/A 42,5 N-NA cement was there therefore built in Saxony Anhalt using the exposed aggregate method of construction. The article reports on the building of the section and compares the results of the initial tests on the concrete made with blastfurnace cement with those on a concrete made with Portland cement. The measurements and observations during the use of CEM III/A cement for the construction of concrete carriageways have indicated that increased addition of air-entraining agents is necessary when using CEM III/A cements. To avoid an increased air void content it is advisable to determine the dependence on mixing time and addition level during the initial testing. Concrete made with CEM III/A cement exhibits less tendency to shrinkage and lower evolution of heat of hydration than a Portland cement concrete. This reduces the risk of uncontrolled cracking. This advantage is particularly apparent during concreting at high temperatures. The results have shown that exposed-aggregate concrete made with CEM III/A cement exhibits somewhat higher weathering loss, but laboratory tests showed that it had adequate resistance to freeze-thaw with de-icing salt. The time when the concrete is brushed off and cut is delayed. The combination of surface retarder and cement should be optimized. The surface of concrete made with blastfurnace cement is brighter than that of Portland cement concrete. The brightness of the concrete carriageway contributes to traffic safety, especially under dark and wet conditions. The construction of concrete carriageways with exposed-aggregate surfaces using a CEM III/A 42,5 N-NA cement has shown that the concrete complies with all the concrete technology parameters given in the new TL Beton-StB 07 and ZTV Beton-StB 07 regulations (air-void content, compressive strength) as well as with layer thickness and surface roughness. The requirements for durability (resistance to freeze-thaw with de-icing salt) were successfully demonstrated in laboratory tests. Observation of the test section will be continued in order to obtain long-term experience under operating conditions. The influence of the curing time and of the procedure on the durability of this type of concrete surface needs to be investigated further. The test results and the observations carried out so far can be summarized by stating that CEM III/A cements are suitable for the exposed aggregate method of construction in addition to the CEM I cements normally used for constructing concrete carriageways. –
